Lippincott's original painting, created in 1891 features an iconic view of an old man seated beside an open fireplace in the interior of a kitchen reading a newspaper with his dog on the floor before him.  This handcrafted needlepoint artwork expertly recreates the features of his 1891 painting to near perfection.  Solid Comfort, a very recognizable piece of American art, is arguably Lippincott's most famous painting.

William Henry Lippincott (Born: 1849, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States of America - Died: 1920, New York, New York, United States of America), a Modern Master American Artist, is known for his works that were aesthetically arresting, easily read treatments of domestic themes furnished in a colonial revival style construct in a familiar, nostalgic and ideal domestic world.  This hand-crafted needlepoint print painstakingly captures, in minute detail, the same cozy aesthetics, style, and construction seen in the painting.

He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia and furthered his training in Paris under academic figural artist Léon Joseph Florentin Bonnat (1833-1922) at the Société de Artistes Français.  He became a regular exhibitor at the prestigious Paris Salon and the Universal Exposition of 1878 in Paris.

After eight years in Paris, Lippincott returned to the United States where he first settled in Portland, Maine but soon moved permanently to New York City, opened a studio on Broadway, and quickly established himself as a successful portraitist, figure, genre, and landscape painter.  He painted wonderful set designs for "La Boheme" and "Salambo" and worked as an illustrator.   He also taught at the National Academy of Design and exhibited throughout North America and Europe.
