Vintage Root Beer Syrup Dispenser

Old Fashioned Soda Fountain / Candy Shoppe Rescue

Do you have fond memories of your childhood corner candy store? Did it also have a counter where you could get delicious banana splits, sundaes, ice cream floats or thick milk shakes? Now you can bring those precious memories home. These items were rescued from an Old Fashioned Soda Fountain/Candy Shoppe that closed. Make them yours and save a little bit of history and a lot of wonderful memories.

This is a vintage root beer syrup dispenser. Item consists of container and metal syrup dispenser assembly. It was an integral part of the soda fountain that you would find as the centerpiece in many drug stores, ice cream parlors and luncheonettes from yesteryear. Unlike today, when you order a soda, the person behind the counter “the soda jerk” would put some syrup (Root Beer, Coca-Cola, etc.) in a glass and add carbonated water.

Container is in good condition, there are no chips. Item has some stains inside and out. I believe the container is made of vitreous china. The company that manufactured this advertised that their containers were made from this material. Vitreous china was used because it is considered more durable, denser and has a brighter shine. On bottom is stamped Knight Fountain Co; 706. Measures approximately 13 7/8 inches high (with dispenser) x 6 1/8 inches long x 4 inches wide. Has a lip that measures 7 3/8 inches long x 4 ½ inches wide x 1 inch thick. Metal dispenser is mounted to a thick black plastic lid that has some scratches. Metal pump knob has a porcelain insert with Root Beer printed on it. Top of knob has faded but is still readable. Metal parts pieces have tarnish.  I was able to pump water, but did not try syrup. If you are going to use it as a syrup dispenser I strongly recommend giving dispenser a good cleaning.
