Found at an estate sale, this lovely 16" x 20" Bob Ross style framed oil painting by Char is based on the Winter Oval lesson from Season 9, Episode 5, but includes some original touches by the artist, including different mountains. It reminds me of Mount Shuksan in Washington's North Cascades at sunrise on a winter morning as viewed from Picture Lake. It’s painted on a high-quality canvas.
The surface of the lake is largely still. Snow cloaks the mountain and covers the bushes in the foreground. I particularly like the subtle reflection of the distant trees in the lake. An unusual aspect of this painting is that the paint is highly textured in places, giving the surface a three-dimensional aspect. A photo taken at an angle attempts to show this.
The rustic wood frame is 21.5” x 25.5”.
The second photo shows a 12” ruler for scale.
Picture Lake, also called Mirror Lake, gets its name from the spectacular view it provides of Mt. Shuksan, long a popular peak among mountain climbers, and its majestic glaciers. The first ascent of this challenging peak was in 1906 by a party that included noted photographer Asahel Curtis, brother of Edward Curtis. Artists and photographers have frequented this spot on Picture Lake for over a century. Whether this view was the inspiration for the mountain in this artist’s emulation of the Bob Ross Winter Oval painting I’m not sure but it seems possible.
As to the artist, Char, I haven't been able to find out anything about her, nor have I been able to find many other examples of her work. I would guess this painting to be about 27 years old.
The rustic solid wood frame is 21.5" x 25.5" and the image area is 15.5" x 19.5".
The framed painting weighs only 3 lbs. 12 oz., making it easy to hang.
