What is Inulin?
Inulin is a soluble dietary fibre, also known as Fructo oligosaccharide (FOS). Inulin is a prebiotic that aids digestive health by promoting beneficial bacteria in the gut. Inulin is high in fibre and low in calories. Inulin can reduce feelings of hunger due to its high Fibre content, which can help assist with fat loss. Research suggests it can help reduce triglyceride levels as well as cholesterol. Inulin may also enhance the absorption of calcium, magnesium, zinc and iron in the colon.

There are many benefits to a high fibre diet; however there is one special source of Fibre that many are unaware of, this is Inulin. Inulin powder is becoming increasingly popular after appearing in the BBC programme "How to stay young" where it was showcased for its numerous health benefits.

Inulin can help slow down digestion and promote calcium absorption, by helping slow digestion this allows sugar to be released in a more controlled time scale reducing blood spiking and promoting healthy blood sugar levels.

How does Inulin work?
The human gut contains between 15,000 and 36,000 species of bacteria, very little of the gut bacteria has the potential to be harmful, however the good bacteria provides many health benefits and Inulin supports good bacteria growth. Inulin is non-digestible meaning it bypasses the stomach and small intestine. Inulin goes to the large intestine where it promotes healthy bacteria growth especially Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli.

These bacteria offer the following benefits:
- Reduce bad bacteria
- Helps prevent infection
- Stimulate the immune system
- Promote frequent bowel movement
- Reduces the body's ability to create certain fats
- Help absorb nutrients from diet

Inulin is a great ingredient for baking. It is used to preserve moisture and bind ingredients together (binding agent), it does this whilst providing a sweet taste. Inulin is also a great addition to Shakes/Smoothies as it can help thicken and sweeten the taste whilst offering various health benefits.
