How do you know when your shifter cables need to be replaced?  If it’s difficult to shift gears (the shifter lever is hard to push and/or it takes a few seconds for it to change directions), your cables are probably sticking.  (They usually start binding and need to be replaced every year or two, which is why they should be replaced in pairs.)
