These patches are not supplied with a heat-seal backing: do you have a heat-sealing machine?  A hand held clothing iron is not sufficient to iron-on patches, they should be sewn to garments. The plastic backing is a clear, glossy film on the patches, that gives them stability and helps to preserve the patch over the years of service that it will provide to you, once sewn to a garment.
