Made famous by the Spanish Riding School of Vienna, the famous Lippizaner stallions all start off their training in a snaffle bridle with drop noseband. The drop noseband helps stop the bit moving around in the horse's mouth. It is not recommended to use a drop noseband with a curb bit or pelham as the noseband impedes the curb action. The noseband should be fitted high enough above the nostrils so that it does not interfere with the breathing of the horse. It avoids putting any pressure on the horse's molars as can happen with a normal noseband, and it can help stop horses crossing their jaw or opening their mouth.Very common before the crank and flash noseband came about, and has recently come back into fashion as many horses prefer this style of noseband
