Start with your picture.

A simple guide to the size you need, before you place your order.

  1. Measure the full picture

    Lay your picture flat. Measure its full width and height, edge to edge, including any border you want to keep.

  2. Check the size option

    Compare your measurements with the size description in the listing. The outside of the frame is a different measurement.

  3. Allow for the opening

    The frame lip can cover a small part of the picture edge. If you choose a mount, check its outside size and its visible window as well.

Using a mount? A mount is the border around your picture. Choose a frame that fits the mount's outside size, then check that the window suits your artwork.

Checking a frame you already have?

Turn the frame over and remove the backing board. Measure the inside width and height of the recess where the picture fits, between the inside edges of the moulding. Compare those measurements with the selected picture size.

Measure from the back. Use the picture-fitting recess, rather than the outside of the frame or the smaller hole you can see through.
Front of frame: the lip hides the picture edges, making the visible opening smaller than the full picture
The front opening is smaller. The lip holds the picture in place and overlaps its edges. A front-window measurement does not show the full picture-fitting size.

The amount of overlap varies with the moulding. With a mount, the frame must fit the mount's outside size; the mount window is a separate measurement.

Picture size

The full width and height of the picture or print you are framing.

Visible opening

The area you see through the front of the frame or mount. It is smaller than the full picture-fitting size because the edges are covered.

Outside frame size

The complete frame from outer edge to outer edge. Use this to plan space on your wall.

One frame in MDF moulding (30 mm wide, 15 mm deep), clear shatterproof safety glazing (not glass), a rigid backing board held by flexible tabs, hanging fittings for wall display, a kick stand for tabletop display on the smaller sizes (10 sizes), no mount. Display artwork and photos are for illustration only and are not included.

Which size should I order?

Measure your artwork edge to edge and compare it with the selected option. The measuring guide above explains the difference between picture size, visible opening and outside frame size.

Why does the front opening measure smaller?

The stated frame size is the picture-fitting size at the back. The front lip overlaps the picture edges to hold it in place. Remove the backing and measure inside the rear recess; do not use the front window or outside frame dimensions to check the selected picture size.

What if I am using a mount?

Choose a frame that fits the mount's outside dimensions, and check that its visible window suits your artwork. Confirm whether a mount is included in your chosen option.
