Edgar Alwin Payne was an American landscape painter closely associated with California Impressionism and the development of the Laguna Beach art community. Largely self-taught, he traveled extensively in the American West and Europe and became known for mountain landscapes, coastal subjects and harbor scenes. His European travels supplied subjects from the fishing ports of France and Italy, where boats, sails and reflected light became recurring elements of his marine compositions.
Cypress Trees, Monterey depicts a dense grouping of mature cypress trees growing among rocky terrain. Dark masses of foliage dominate the upper composition, while the twisting trunks and exposed rocks are articulated with restrained browns, greens and touches of ochre.
