Chaïm Soutine was a Belarus-born painter who established his career in France and became associated with the School of Paris. Working principally in portraiture, landscape and still life, he developed an individual approach characterized by vigorous brushwork, distorted forms and concentrated color. His portraits frequently depict children, workers and other anonymous sitters, while his landscapes and still lifes extend the same energetic handling of paint across different subjects.
