Exceptional Civil War Confederate CSA North Carolina officer’s kepi hat cap constructed with an olive-brown cloth body, contrasting black lower band, dark leather visor, and leather chinstrap fitted with a brass adjustment buckle. The cap is richly decorated with gold-colored bullion cord, including piping along the body seams and an elaborate interwoven quatrefoil design across the crown enclosed within a circular bullion border. Brass North Carolina side buttons displaying the state seal and “NORTH CAROLINA” lettering secure the chinstrap and add an important state association to the piece. The interior retains its brown satin-type lining and interior band, showing considerable wear and deterioration from age. The exterior exhibits fading, staining, surface wear, loose and worn bullion threads, and wear to the leather visor and chinstrap, as shown. The distinctive officer-grade bullion decoration, North Carolina buttons, materials, construction, and overall configuration are, in my opinion, consistent with a Confederate North Carolina officer’s kepi from the American Civil War era. A visually impressive and historically significant piece of Confederate officer headgear with outstanding display presence for a Civil War, North Carolina, Confederate, or military collection.
