ATTENTION AND THE TWO NATURES — Michel Conge
The Lake Press, Tusten, New York
9½ × 6½ inches · 13 pages · sewn, hand-bound in printed wrappers

A limited fine-press edition. One thousand copies in the first printing (February 2003); this is the second printing of one thousand copies, finished August 2005. Two thousand copies exist in total.

Dr. Michel Conge — French physician, and a pupil of G. I. Gurdjieff.

In 1966 Conge visited Santiago, Chile, and gave a talk to a group who had only recently begun to study Gurdjieff's ideas. He spoke of the two natures that constitute man's being and their need to reunite, and went on to explore attention as correspondingly divided: ordinary attention, belonging to the lower nature, and another attention — largely inaccessible to us as we are — belonging to the higher.

This is the text of that talk, given 6 August 1966, translated by the Lake Press from Spanish and French transcripts, and published with the permission of Sylvie Conge Brion. An authorized publication, not a circulated transcript.

Conge led groups in Paris until his death in 1984.

THE PRODUCTION

From the colophon: set in 13/16 Garamond with Sanvito titling; printed on Mohawk paper with Fabriano Ingres cover stock at Oxbow Press, Hatfield, Massachusetts; typesetting, finish work and hand-binding by the Lake Press, Tusten, New York.

Sewn binding, printed wrappers, generous margins, printer's fleurons in red. A small book made properly.

CONDITION — Very Good, with two owner's markings, both pictured.

The previous owner's name is written in ink, in block capitals, in the upper right corner of the title page. It is plainly visible. There is also a date written at the rear, and some bent corners.

Otherwise the wrappers are clean and bright, the sewing is sound, and the text is unmarked throughout. Not ex-library.

I would rather you see the name in the photographs and decide than find it after it arrives.

All photographs form part of the description. Ships flat in a rigid mailer. Smoke-free home.
