VINTAGE BRITISH TINPLATE TOY
WELLS-BRIMTOY WONDERJET
Mechanical Tinplate Jet Aircraft
Early 1950s · Made in Great Britain · Original Box · Working

A superb original Wells-Brimtoy Wonderjet mechanical tinplate aircraft, dating from the early 1950s and complete with its highly attractive original illustrated box.

The futuristic jet-shaped aircraft is finished in silver lithographed tinplate with cockpit and pilot detailing, swept wings, red tail fin and the number 192 printed to the underside. The underside is also marked Made in Gt. Britain and Pat. App. No. 30096/50.

The original box is marked Wells-Brimtoy Distributors Ltd. present the Wonderjet and carries wonderfully colourful period aviation artwork. One side also explains “How a Jet Engine Works” and identifies the manufacturer as A. Wells & Co. Ltd., Stirling Road, Walthamstow, E.17.

The survival of the original illustrated box is a particularly attractive feature, especially as the box remains colourful and well presented despite the aircraft itself clearly having seen plenty of childhood use.

CONDITION

Very playworn vintage condition with extensive age-related surface wear, scratches, rubbing, tarnishing and paint/lithograph loss across the tinplate body, particularly around the nose, wings, edges and underside.

The red tail fin remains present and the wheels and mechanical components are intact. The mechanism has been tested and is working. Despite the considerable playwear, the aircraft has a great original untouched appearance.

The original illustrated Wells-Brimtoy Wonderjet box is also included and is notably well preserved compared with the toy, retaining strong colours and graphics with general age-related rubbing, creasing, edge and corner wear and some small tears.

Please examine all photographs carefully as these form an important part of the description and provide the best indication of condition.
