Stunning Antique 14" Chinese
Porcelain Fish Bowl / Jardiniere
Theme: The Eight Immortals
Crossing the Sea with Hand-Gilded
Iron-Red Borders
This magnificent, large-scale antique Chinese porcelain fish bowl (jardiniere/planter), dating to the late 19th or early 20th century. It measures approximately 14 inches in diameter and 9 1/4 inches in height.
Authentic Craftsmanship & Details:
• Genuine Hand-Gilding: Unlike modern mass-produced
reproductions that utilize flawless chemical transfers or screen printing, the intricate gold floral work on this piece is strictly hand-painted.
Close inspection reveals the beautiful, subtle variations in line weight, slight brush imperfections, and human touch characteristic of period artists.
• Layered Overglaze Enameling:
The gold decoration features a distinct three-dimensional texture, raised visibly on top of the rich iron-red glaze. This costly, time-consuming double-firing process confirms its period antique construction.
• Main Body Narrative: Features a highly detailed, hand-decorated scene depicting the classic Chinese mythological tale of the Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea
The figures are hand-rendered in a vibrant Famille Rose palette amidst stylized crashing waves and swirling auspicious clouds.
• Calligraphy Inscription: Features a traditional poetic inscription detailing the narrative of the Immortals utilizing their unique magical treasures to cross the rough sea, ending with the famous phrase: "Each displays their divine power"
• Base Mark: The underside bears an iron-red stamped, six-character Qianlong square seal mark (乾隆年), executed in the traditional period style.
Condition:
Excellent antique condition. The substantial porcelain body is structurally sound with no cracks or chips.
Expected light shelf wear to the unglazed foot rim and minor, honest rubbing to the gold gilt accents consistent with age, authentic use, and display.
