ARTIST: Abraham Julk Junior, British School (1851 – 1922) SUBJECT: Expansive landscape with a figure in forestry MEDIUM: Oil on chamfered Mahogony panel SIGNATURE Lower left DATE: An early work for the artist, dating c1870 – 1875 in our opinion SIZE: Visible painting 24.75 x 17 cm (9.5 x 7 inches), Frame 48 x 41cm (19 x 16 inches), Depth 8cm (3 inches) PROVENANCE: British estate sale, private collection; old labels previously affixed to the back of the panel and the frame lost in antiquity although a faint residue remains, but is ineligible CONDITION: Overall, fair to good, subject as follows: the work would benefit from a clean following years of display and storage, minor scuffs to the edges, commensurate with its age, minor marks on the work through display and handling, do not detract: this painting is presented in an original, and unrestored condition FRAME: Appears to be the original frame, with gesso losses over time and light age-related wear
We present an expansive landscape in oils, a figure in forestry beneath a summer skyline. This is a painting by the British artist Abraham Hulk Junior (1851 – 1922), This is an early work, dating c1870 – 1875 in our opinion. Abraham Hulk Jnr, the younger of the Hulk’ family of artists, was a prolific landscape painter, working in oils and watercolour. During a long career Hulk’s work was widely exhibited, including at thee Royal Academy, Royal Society of Artists in Birmingham and the Walker Gallery, Liverpool. Several examples of Hulk’s work can be seen on artprice.com, findartinfo.com, mutualart.com, artnet.com, invaluable.com besides the auction sites of bonhams.com, sothebys.com, christies.com and several leading provincial and international galleries and auction houses. This is typically a strong example of Hulk’s work, a broad vista landscape layered by high clouds, birds swarming over the trees giving the picture much depth. Presented in good to fair condition, in its original frame, this painting looks fabulous displayed
