Description Summary
Ancient Greek Bronze Coin – Seleucid Empire, King Seleukos III (225–223 BC)
Up for auction is a fascinating, historically rich bronze issue from the brief three-year reign of Seleukos III. This piece features a highly desirable ancient countermark, adding immense historical character and rarity to the coin.
- Obverse: Draped bust of Artemis facing right, hair tied in a knot, with a quiver over her shoulder.
- Special Countermark: Features a distinct, ancient countermark precisely struck over the neck area of Artemis. This countermark was applied by official authorities to re-validate or extend the coin's circulation life.
- Reverse: Apollo Delphios seated left on an omphalos (the sacred navel-stone), testing an arrow in his right hand and resting his left hand on a grounded bow.
- Legend: ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΣΕΛΕΥΚΟΥ ("Of King Seleukos")
- Catalog Standard: SC 924.1 (Houghton & Lorber reference standard)
Seller Notes:
A wonderful specimen for collectors of Hellenistic or Seleucid coinage. It boasts an intact 3.51g weight and a solid, irregular 13.7–15.1mm flan typical of the era. The countermark on the obverse is exceptionally well-placed and clearly visible. Please see high-resolution photos to judge the fine details, patina, and overall condition for yourself.
