Rick Wisecarver began his artistic practices as a teenager working primarily with oils, until his mother encouraged him to paint on pottery. Wisecarver’s hometown, Zanesville, Ohio, was the pottery capital of the world in the 19th century. Wisecarver studied this history, and experimented with techniques to duplicate older glazing methods. He opened WIHOA Art Pottery in the early 1970s in Zanesville, and became a well-known artist for animal, floral and native American subjects on pottery. Rick named his potterery WIHOA ART POTTERY. The WI was for Wisecarver and the HO was for Hoadley which was Rick’s mother’s maiden name. The A was added for Rick’s Aunt Florence Ault.  He passed away in 2002
