This is a set of three antique prints from Cours d'architecture qui comprend les ordres de Vignole, by Augustin-Charles d'Aviler (1653-1701), published in Paris by Jean Mariette in 1738.

The book was an important French architectural treatise covering architecture, architectural decoration, construction and garden design. This 1738 edition was revised and enlarged, with numerous engraved plates illustrating architectural designs, buildings, architectural details and formal gardens.

These are genuine prints from the year stated, and not later reproductions of any kind. As such, they may show ageing/wear and have stains/marks/foxing or other imperfections - please have a good look at the photos to determine the exact condition of each print.

This particular lot contains three engraved plates from the section on the Doric Order, illustrating the principal architectural elements and proportions of the Doric order. The plates show a Doric pedestal and base, together with detailed studies of the Doric capital and entablature, including columns, mouldings, profiles, measurements and decorative architectural details.

The plates provide a fascinating visual survey of 18th-century French architectural design and the classical Doric order, showing the precise proportions, measurements and geometric principles used in classical architectural construction.
