Jean Dupas was a French painter and decorative artist associated with Art Deco and modern classicism. Trained in Bordeaux and Paris, he received the Premier Grand Prix de Rome in 1910 and subsequently worked across painting, illustration and monumental decoration. His compositions are distinguished by precise draftsmanship, elongated figures and a decorative treatment of classical subject matter. André Maillart was a French engraver whose collaboration with Dupas translated the latter's highly finished designs into print.

L'Enlèvement d'Europe was created in 1931 as an etching and aquatint by Jean Dupas and André Maillart. Christie's records the work as an etching and aquatint on Rives paper with light red highlights, designed by Dupas and engraved by Maillart. The image represents Europa seated upon the bull amid an extravagant arrangement of flowers and foliage. The monumental animal is rendered in deep tonal passages that contrast sharply with the pale figure and densely articulated botanical forms.
