Thomas Turner Opinion:

An extremely rare and highly desirable early nine-piece bamboo valise rod by William Blacker of 54 Dean Street, Soho, London, dating to around 1840.

The rod is constructed in nine individual sections, each approximately 16 inches in length, together with a spare tip. It was designed for compact carriage in a travelling valise, making it particularly popular with touring anglers of the period.

When assembled, the rod forms an elegant trout or light salmon rod with the refined proportions typically associated with William Blacker. The butt section, as shown in the photographs, is engraved:

“William Blacker 54 Dean Street Soho London”

William Blacker was a highly regarded London-based fishing tackle dealer and fly dresser during the 19th century. He is especially remembered for his influential 1842 publication, Blackers Art Of Fly Making, which helped shape early fly fishing and fly tying. Alongside his published work, he was also an accomplished tackle dealer and supplier of fine bamboo and cane rods during this important developmental period in rod making.

Multi-piece valise rods of this age are exceptionally rare to encounter. In over 40 years, this is only the second example we have ever seen.
