The American naturalist Francis Harper (1886-1972) is known for his study of the 18th-century naturalists John and William Bartram. Harper studied the Okefenokee Swamp, including the tree frogs nesting in the pines which are the subject of this work "The Call of the Pine-woods Tree-frog Is a Characteristic Sound During Spring and Summer in the Woods of the Okefinokee Swamp Region". He also conducted fieldwork in the north eastern United States and northern Canada.
