The full designation of this car is the 1954 Mercedes-Benz W 196 R Stromlinienwagen, chassis 00009/54. Built first as a long-wheelbase, open wheel W 196 R, it received enclosed-wheel streamliner bodywork for the 1955 Italian Grand Prix. Stirling Moss qualified the number 16 car alongside Juan Manuel Fangio, briefly led during lap nine and stopped for a replacement windscreen. He then set the race's fastest lap before a failed piston ended his drive after 27 laps.
