Entering its fifth World Championship season, the McLaren M23 remained the backbone of Marlboro Team McLaren while the M26 was readied. James Hunt took Gordon Coppuck's proven design to pole position at each of the opening three rounds and finished second in Brazil; Jochen Mass later matched that result in Sweden. At Silverstone, a third works M23 - race number 40 - gave Gilles Villeneuve his Formula One debut. By mid-season, McLaren's transition to the M26 was complete.
