STORY
The 1920s and ‘30s turned jewelry design on its head. Where the Victorians had layered curves and sentiment, Art Deco jewelers stripped things down to line, symmetry, and bold color — clean rectangular stones, architectural settings, a kind of confidence that matched the skyscrapers going up at the same time. A deep emerald-green stone set in a crisp emerald cut, flanked by small decorative scrollwork at the shoulders, is a textbook example of the era’s design language: geometric at the center, ornamental at the edges.
The scrollwork on the shoulders of this ring is a lovely detail — small, rounded motifs that soften the ring’s otherwise angular lines, the kind of flourish a jeweler adds when a piece is meant to feel finished rather than merely functional.
And then there is the ring itself.
A rectangular, emerald-cut green stone, approximately 8mm by 6.5mm, is held at the center in a four-prong setting, its clean step-cut facets catching light in long, geometric planes. On either shoulder, a small decorative scroll motif curls outward from the setting, adding a touch of ornament to an otherwise architectural design. The gold shows a natural patina consistent with age, softening its surface tone rather than a bright, polished shine. The gallery beneath the stone is pierced in an openwork pattern, visible from the side and back.
