A genuine antique D&W Auchterlonie “Hand Made” brassie retailed through Taplow Golf Club, Buckinghamshire — bearing the initials “R.H.” of the original owner, from one of St. Andrews’ most celebrated clubmaking families.

The Maker:

Auchterlonie was a family firm in St. Andrews making hand-crafted wooden golf clubs since it was established in 1895 by brothers Tom, David and Willie Auchterlonie, who were apprenticed to Robert Forgan & Son in the early 1890s. The Auchterlonie golf clubs were used by many of the top names in golf in the early 1900s due to the high level of quality and precision they offered.  The “Hand Made” designation confirms premium grade production above standard Auchterlonie output.

The Club & Provenance:

Taplow Golf Club was established in Buckinghamshire, England in 1892-1893  — one of the earlier English golf clubs in the Thames Valley area. “Taplow” stamped on an Auchterlonie club confirms this was commissioned by or sold through the Taplow Golf Club professional for his membership — a historically traceable provenance connecting this club directly to a specific English golf club of the early 1900s. The “R.H.” initials stamped above identify the original owner — a common period practice of personalizing clubs for club members.
