An evocative 1916 Original Hobo Nickel, hand-carved on a Buffalo nickel host and attributed to an unnamed artist in OHNS terminology.

The obverse transforms James Earle Fraser’s Native American portrait into a distinctive bearded figure wearing a broad hat, with a small beard, mustache, and bow detail worked into the lower bust area. The original LIBERTY inscription and 1916 date remain visible, anchoring the carving to its classic Buffalo nickel host. The reverse retains the standard bison motif with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and FIVE CENTS, all consistent with the Type Two Buffalo nickel design.

The carving is bold and expressive, with confident incised lines defining the hat brim, facial hair, and ornamental features. The surfaces show honest circulation and age, with deep gray-nickel color, darker recesses, and areas of olive-gold patina that enhance the vintage character.
