Royal Doulton character jugs have become one of the company's most recognisable collectable ranges, combining highly expressive modelling with wonderfully colourful glazes and imaginative handles relating to each individual character.
This group spans several decades of Royal Doulton production and includes characters drawn from literature, folklore, history and traditional British life.
The collection comprises Sairey Gamp D5528, Falstaff D6385, The Cardinal D6033, Parson Brown D5529, Neptune D6552, The Sleuth D6635 and North American Indian D6614.
Several of these are long-running and very recognisable Royal Doulton designs. Sairey Gamp and Parson Brown originate from the earliest years of Doulton character-jug production, while later examples such as The Sleuth and North American Indian demonstrate how the range continued to develop through the second half of the 20th century.
Offered together, the seven make an excellent instant collection and look particularly effective displayed as a group due to the variety of characters, colours and sculptural handles.
The collection is in very good vintage condition overall.
Six of the seven character jugs have no chips, cracks, damage or repairs observed, with only light age-related handling and base wear.
The Cardinal has a fine line to the inside of the upper rim which appears to be an original firing fault / firing line rather than later impact damage. This area is shown clearly in the close-up photographs. It remains stable and the jug continues to display extremely well.
As expected with vintage Royal Doulton pottery, there may also be occasional minor kiln marks, glaze variations, crazing or other small manufacturing characteristics.
