“As longtime fans of tinned fish, we’re elated over the recent renaissance of sardine appreciation (sardinaissance?) that we’ve seen among certain foodie types. We’ve decided to mark the occasion with a wave of products that give the dependably delicious sardine its due celebration. One such product, Trader Joe’s Milk Chocolate Sardines with Sea Salt, could do with some extra explanation: dear reader, these are not Chocolate-covered Sardines. Although we can’t bring ourselves to fully rule out that such a combination wouldn’t be appealing to some, these are, in fact, Sardine-shaped Chocolates.

And they are excellent ones at that! Our supplier, a bean-to-bar chocolatier out of Slovakia, seasons the Milk Chocolate with which these Sardines are made with a bit of Sea Salt, both to provide a fascinating flavor contrast on the palate, and to subtly evoke a real sardine’s briny domain. They also individually wrap each Milk Chocolate Sardine in decorative foil, and pack them in a fun little box that resembles an old-fashioned sardine tin. We find they make a lovely gift for any tinned fish-ionados in your life, and add a wonderful touch of whimsy when used to decorate a nautical-themed dessert board.”
