Potentially the most bizarre and fantastical poster in the circus world, an elephant is seen tightrope walking above a captivated crowd. Below, a Pierrot-esque pachyderm swoons in fear of his friend falling to his death. A truly remarkable two-sheet!

Because it is a commercial stock poster from the 1890s, the artwork is historically attributed to the David Allen & Sons In-House Studio rather than a single celebrated fine artist.

During the late 19th century, commercial lithography houses operated on a studio system:

The Anonymity of the Lithographer: Master artists were employed full-time by the printer to hand-draw these massive images directly backward onto heavy Bavarian limestone blocks using greasy crayons. Because they were salaried employees, individual artists were strictly forbidden from signing their names to the artwork.
The Studio Directors: During this exact era, the creative direction of David Allen's London and Belfast studios was overseen by legendary print managers like William "Billy" Cleary, who ensured that every animal texture, shadow, and fold of skin looked impossibly vivid.
The Signature to Look For: Instead of an artist's signature, the true mark of authorship on this piece is the printed corporate text found in the bottom margin: "David Allen & Sons, Ltd. Belfast"
