The February 23, 1861 issue of Harper's Weekly captured a deeply divided America on the brink of civil war. It featured a front-page woodcut of Chantrey’s Statue of Washington, an early map comparing regional sizes, views of strategic Southern forts, and artwork by Winslow Homer.
