The wonderfully honest and characterful early twentieth century scratch-built model of a coastal steam fishing trawler, measuring an impressive forty inches in length, the whole constructed almost entirely in timber with a planked hull, the model retains its original painted finish, the hull picked out in natural varnished timber above a green-painted waterline, whilst the simple deck fittings, hand-bent wire guard rails, sheet-metal bulwarks and cabins, turned funnel and handmade timber display cradle all speak of an individual craftsman’s work rather than a commercially produced kit, the model having slightly naïve proportions and surviving from the second quarter of the twentieth century.

The model displays decades of honest wear and remains entirely untouched. There are expected losses to the finer fittings, including the absence of masts, rigging and various deck details, whilst the cabins, rails and metalwork show oxidation and age-related distortion. The surface has accumulated a wonderful dry patina throughout, with the timber mellowing beautifully over time. It has not been restored, preserving the authenticity and charm of its handmade construction.

Steam-powered fishing trawlers transformed Britain’s fishing industry during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, replacing sail-powered craft with more powerful vessels capable of working further offshore and in harsher conditions. Handmade ship models such as this were often produced as commemorative pieces or during long periods ashore by men who spent their working lives at sea. Unlike finely engineered Admiralty or commercial presentation models, these vernacular examples possess a distinctive warmth and individuality, with every component fashioned by hand. Their appeal lies not in technical perfection but in their honest craftsmanship and evocative representation of Britain’s maritime heritage. Comparable handmade fishing boat models continue to attract strong interest from collectors of maritime folk art and vernacular objects. The model was clearly built by someone intimately familiar with working fishing vessels, perhaps a retired fisherman, shipwright or engineer, giving it a genuine folk-art quality that is increasingly sought after today.
