The Battle of Cedar Mountain (also known as Cedar Run or Slaughter’s Mountain) took place on August 9, 1862, in Culpeper County, Virginia. Confederate forces under Maj. Gen. Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson defeated a smaller Union force commanded by Maj. Gen. Nathaniel P. Banks during this opening clash of the Northern Virginia Campaign.

Key Facts and Figures

  • The Commanders: Union Maj. Gen. Nathaniel P. Banks led about 8,000 troops, while Confederate Maj. Gen. Stonewall Jackson commanded a force of roughly 24,000.
  • The Casualties: The violent, three-hour fight resulted in about 3,700 total casualties. The Union suffered roughly 2,350 losses, and the Confederates lost about 1,350.

The Flow of Battle

  • Unexpected Aggression: General John Pope (the commander of the new Union Army of Virginia) was trying to advance on the strategic rail hub of Gordonsville. Jackson marched north to intercept the threat and spotted an isolated Union corps.
  • Union Surge: Outnumbered but aggressive, Banks's Union soldiers launched a fierce attack. They initially pushed the Confederates back and had significant success, even mortally wounding Confederate General Charles Winder in the early fighting.
  • The Counterattack: Just when the Union seemed to be winning, Jackson personally rallied his waiving troops. A fresh division under Confederate General A.P. Hill arrived and launched a massive counterattack.
  • The Outcome: The overpowering Confederate counterattack broke the Union lines, forcing Banks's men to retreat about a mile in the sweltering heat.

Historical Significance

Cedar Mountain was important for a few reasons. It served as Stonewall Jackson’s last independent command. Additionally, the Confederate victory here set the stage for the Second Manassas (Bull Run) Campaign later that same month.
