Frances MacDonald was a Scottish artist, designer, and member of the Glasgow School whose work helped define the distinctive Glasgow Style. Working in painting, gesso panels, metalwork, and illustration, she developed a highly personal symbolic language characterized by elongated figures, floral motifs, and ethereal compositions influenced by Symbolism and Art Nouveau.

Spring presents two stylized female figures framed by flowering plants within a richly decorative Art Nouveau design. The symmetrical composition and flowing ornamental forms exemplify the Glasgow Style's synthesis of Symbolism and decorative art.
