This is an antique Japanese "boro" noragi (workwear jacket) made of indigo-dyed fabric, dating back to the early Meiji period. It is a traditional utilitarian garment constructed by repeatedly patching and stitching together various scraps of cloth over time.
The jacket features a patchwork of multiple indigo textiles in different shades of blue. It includes sections of woven striped patterns and fragments with resist-dyed (katazome) motifs. The garment is reinforced with hand-stitched "sashiko" running threads, which hold the heavily layered fabrics together.
Height (Length): 100 cm / 39.37 in
Width: 108 cm / 42.51 in
The garment exhibits severe signs of aging and heavy historical use. There are large tears, frayed edges, holes, stains, color fading, and extensive hand-sewn repairs throughout the fabric.
