The Crataegus laevigata 'Paul's Scarlet', or Midland Hawthorn, is a deservedly popular, compact tree that brings a dramatic burst of color to smaller gardens. In spring, its branches are heavily smothered in masses of double, deep-pink flowers, beautifully contrasted by glossy, deeply lobed dark-green leaves. As autumn approaches, the foliage transitions into warm, golden-yellow and orange sunset tones.

With an elegant, upright habit and light branches that gently drape at the tips, this tree is highly manageable, reaching a compact height of 4 to 6 meters in 20 years.

Incredibly tough and low-maintenance, 'Paul's Scarlet' is exceptionally hardy. It tolerates a wide variety of soils, copes brilliantly with coastal winds and urban pollution, and requires only minimal pruning in late autumn. For an enchanting spring display, plant it alongside Crataegus laevigata 'Plena'—the creamy-white blossoms of 'Plena' will contrast beautifully with the vibrant, fluffy pink flowers of 'Paul's Scarlet'.
