Vintage Mexican Folk Art Paper Mache Basket Jean Valentine
Artes Folklorico presents a wonderful vintage papier-mache basket by the celebrated
Jeanne Valentine. She was a visionary, French-born fashion designer and artist who
became a prominent figure in mid-century modern Mexican folk art through her mastery
of papier-mache. She blended sophisticated European aesthetics with traditional
Mexican craftsmanship. Her workshop started in the 1960s in San Miguel de Allende,
Mexico, and was highly successful. Her pieces are now highly sought-after by
collectors. The piece up for auction is a basket that features a beautiful hand-painted
female face with an exquisite, elongated neck. The basket has numerous small three-
dimensional embellishments throughout (see photographs). There are four rounded
feet. The bottom of the basket has the original foil label that reads, “Jeanne Valentine,
S. A. Made in Mexico” and possibly a faded price label. The piece measures 13 inches
high, 7 inches wide, and 4-3/4 inches deep. The basket is in very good vintage
condition (see photographs). A great find for anyone who collects vintage, old, or
antique Mexican folk art, mid-century artistic baskets, or the exceptional artwork of Jean
Valentine. Please look at the other vintage Mexican folk art we have up for auction.
