Illustrated with 15 colour maps, this is the 1873 *first edition* of The Student’s ATLAS Of CLASSICAL GEOGRAPHY by Leonhard Schmitz.
Although the introduction suggests its author was clearly pleased and proud of this work, this compact 15-map atlas, recreating the world as it was during the classical era, remains unrecorded among the laurels of the classical scholar (and Prussian amputee) Schmitz’s bibliography …
Hardback, around seven inches by more than 10.5 tall, is bound in its publisher's worn but original green and black blind stamped covers, decorated with SPQR and further classical motif.
Provenance: through bookseller’s label of Spinke of Chippenham and contemporary inscription of original owner W E Warby inked above title [as photos, above + below]; free from further permanent inscription and markings to the text.
First edition published by Collins, London, in 1873.
Although interior condition is overall good, because this original letterpress book is more than 150 years old, it displays minor signs of use and age — like usual age-toning to old paper; initial gather (to p 6) loose but present — consistent with a printed object of the Victorian era. All 28 numbered text pages + 15 maps are complete and, as shown [below] essentially correct.
