This fascinating pottery vase features a glossy brown glaze with cameos of a bearded man with a hat often referred to as a Cavalier or Baron. The vase is unmarked and this line has often been incorrectly attributed to Peters and Reed. Interestingly, some clarity was gained when a mug with the Cavalier surfaced that had an early Weller Pottery mark. It makes sense, as I have seen this shape of vase with a Weller Louwelsa mark. This would likely date to around the same time the Louwelsa line was made, about 1896 to 1924. This blended brown color is the Weller standard glaze. The vase measures approximately 5 3/8" tall and 6" wide. It is in good condition with crazing and some surface wear. There are two flaws to the inside of the opening, on the other side of where the handles are attached. They are crescent shaped lines, a separation in the clay where the glaze didn't cover all the way. There are closeups in the last two photos. There are stilt marks on the base of the three feet. There are no other flaws, no chips or cracks. Please see my photos, and thanks for the interest.
