You are bidding on an original ticket stub from the UCLA Bruins vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish men’s basketball game played Saturday, January 24, 1976 at the Athletic and Convocation Center (Joyce Center) in South Bend, Indiana. Reserved Seat, Lower Arena, Section 17, Row 12, Seat 16. $4.00 face value.
This is a highly collectible ticket from one of college basketball’s greatest rivalries of the 1970s. UCLA came to South Bend as the defending national champions — John Wooden had won his 10th and final title just the previous spring before retiring — now under first-year coach Gene Bartow. Notre Dame was ranked #5 nationally, led by future NBA Hall of Famer Adrian Dantley, averaging a spectacular 29 points and 10 rebounds per game that season. The game was nationally televised and strategically scheduled one week after the Super Bowl for maximum exposure — a testament to how big this rivalry was on the American sports landscape. Notre Dame led by as many as 8 points in the second half but couldn’t hold on.
Just two years removed from Notre Dame’s stunning end to UCLA’s record 88-game winning streak, every meeting between these two programs was a major national event. A fantastic piece of Digger Phelps era Fighting Irish basketball history.
Ticket shows light wear and minor damage to top right corner consistent with nearly 50 years of storage. Sharp green and white printing on cream stock.
