You are bidding on an original ticket stub from the Marquette Warriors vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish men’s basketball game played Saturday, February 28, 1976 at the Athletic and Convocation Center (Joyce Center) in South Bend, Indiana. Reserved Seat, Lower Arena, Section 17, Row 12, Seat 16. $4.00 face value.
This was one of the marquee college basketball matchups of the entire 1975-76 season. Marquette, coached by the legendary Al McGuire — who would go on to win the national championship the very next season in his emotional farewell — came into South Bend ranked #2 in the country. Notre Dame was ranked #7 nationally, led by future NBA Hall of Famer Adrian Dantley, who averaged an incredible 29 points and 10 rebounds per game that season and was a consensus First Team All-American. McGuire deployed a cunning box-and-one defense specifically to shut down Dantley, holding him to just 6 points in the first half. Dantley battled back with 19 second-half points but Marquette held on to win 81-75 in a classic battle between two of college basketball’s most storied independent programs.
A top-10 showdown featuring two Hall of Fame coaches in Digger Phelps and Al McGuire, and one of the greatest college players of the decade in Adrian Dantley. This is one of the most historically significant tickets from the entire Digger Phelps era at Notre Dame. Ticket shows light wear and a small tear on the right edge consistent with nearly 50 years of storage. Sharp printing in classic Notre Dame green and white.
