The 1970 Tour de France, which spanned 4,114 km across 23 stages, was dominated by Belgian cycling legend Eddy Merckx, who claimed his second consecutive Tour victory. Merckx, already establishing himself as one of the greatest riders in the sport, won an impressive eight stages and secured both the yellow jersey and the polka dot jersey as the best climber. Second place went to Dutchman Joop Zoetemelk, who would later become a Tour champion himself, while Gösta Pettersson of Sweden completed the podium in third. The green jersey for the points classification was awarded to German sprinter Walter Godefroot. This edition is remembered for Merckx’s overwhelming superiority, cementing his reputation as "The Cannibal" and a dominant force in professional cycling.
