Eckersley came up to the Cleveland Indians in 1975 as a starter, winning 13 games and being named American League Rookie Pitcher of the Year with a 2.60 ERA. On May 30, 1977, Eckersley pitched a No-Hitter against the California Angels. After he was traded to the Boston Red Sox for 1978 where he was a 20-Game Winner.  Later, he went to the Cubs helping them to their first playoff appearance in many years, but he had not been the same pitcher, struggling at times.  Going to the Oakland A's in 1987, Manager Tony Larussa planned to use Eckersley as a set-up man or middle reliever.  An injury to the A's closer led to Eckersley becoming the closer and saving 16 games.  In 1988, he became a dominant closer, saving 45 games and leading Oakland to the postseason.  He would save all 4 Oakland wins in the ALCS against Boston, but they fell in the World Series to Kirk Gibson and the Dodgers.  The A's and Eckersley won the 1989 World Series Championship but then lost the 1990 World Series to Cincinnati.  Eckersley, a 6-time All-Star, was the 1988 ALCS MVP, 1992 American League MVP and Cy Young Award Winner with 51 Saves. He was 2-time Rolaids Relief Man of the Year and 2-time MLB Saves Leader.  When Larussa left for the Cardinals, he took Eckersley with him, with 'Eck' saving 66 games in his two seasons with St. Louis.  Eckersley is in both the A's and Red Sox Halls of Fame, his Number 43 is retired by the A's and he was named to Major League Baseball's All-Time Team.  He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2004.  His career numbers are 197 Wins, 3.50 ERA, 20 Shutouts, 100 Complete Games, 390 Saves and 2,401 Strikeouts.
