We present a landscape study in watercolours, ascribed verso as ‘Evening out, Piddinghoe, Sussex’, by the prolific British painter Walter Fryer Stocks (1842 – 1915).  Signed and dated lower left, 1873.  Painted en grisaille, a charming scene, full of movement capturing the mid-Victorian enthusiasm for a picnic or family day out.  This is a view of Piddinghoe from across the River Ouse.  Walter Fryer Stocks was the second son of nine children of the painter and engraver, Lumb Stocks (British, 1811 – 1889).   An artistic family, celebrated in Victorian England:  his younger brother Arthur Stocks.  (1845 – 1889) exhibited at the Royal Academy several times, Walter Stocks became a highly skilled and prolific painter of rural landscapes, working in watercolours  He exhibited widely throughout his career, including at the Royal Academy, Royal Institution and the Royal Society o Panters in Watercolours.  He developed a close association with the pre-Raphaelites, although retained his more traditional presentation for the burgeoning Victorian marketplace.   Many examples of the work of Walter Fryer Stocks can be seen on artprice.com, invaluable.com, artnet.com, mutualart.com besides several provincial auction sites.  In public ownership[p, included in the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert  collections,  can be seen  on ArtUK.    Presented in good  condition in a contemporary  frame, this painting will look fabulous displayed
