Agent Phil Coulson:


Portrayed by Clark Gregg, has appeared in five feature films, two Marvel One-Shots, and three television series within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

His appearances span from the beginning of the Infinity Saga to various expanded universe expansions.


Feature Films:


Coulson’s cinematic appearances are not chronological, as some films serve as prequels.


  • Iron Man (2008): Coulson introduces the character to the MCU, attempting to debrief Tony Stark after his escape from Afghanistan.

  • Iron Man 2 (2010): He is assigned to keep a watchful eye on Stark and oversee his transition into a proper hero.

  • Thor (2011): He is dispatched to New Mexico to handle the arrival of Mjölnir and establish the S.H.I.E.L.D. containment site.

  • The Avengers (2012): Serves as the key glue bringing the heroes together. He is stabbed by Loki and tragically dies, acting as the catalyst that unites the team.

  • Captain Marvel (2019): Set in the 1990s, this prequel showcases a much younger Coulson early in his S.H.I.E.L.D. career working alongside Nick Fury.


Marvel One-Shots:


Coulson also appeared in two canonical S.H.I.E.L.D.-focused digital short films.

  • A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor's Hammer (2011): Television and Digital Series Following his death in The Avengers.

  • Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (2013–2020): Agent Phil Coulson was brought back to life to lead a live-action ensemble as a main protagonist for all seven seasons.

  • Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Slingshot (2016): Guest appearance in a digital spin-off series.

  • What If...? (2021): Gregg voiced alternate universe variants of Agent Phil Coulson in this animated series.
