Available for purchase is a RARE 19th-century military geography atlas created for the Special Military School of Saint-Cyr located in Guer, France. It is titled "Atlas De Geographie Militaire Adopte Par M. Le Ministre De La Guerre Pour L'Ecole Speciale Militaire De Saint-Cyr" (Atlas of Military Geography adopted by the Minister of War for the Special Military School of Saint-Cyr). This version was published in 1886 by Jouvet et Cie in Paris. The atlas contains 42 double page color maps (including 1 fold-out map) mounted on tabs engraved by Geisendorfer and printed by Lemercier. The maps include various characteristics of France and its colonies during the period, as well as some other countries.

This large atlas measures approximately 18" x 12 1/2". The cover is red percaline with gold text and black decoration. The map titles and text are in French. l purchased this atlas at a recent auction that was liquidating the collection of a serious collector. This atlas is guaranteed to be an original 1886 publication and NOT a reprint. Please check my positive feedback and buy with confidence from a trusted seller. The L’École Spéciale Militaire de Saint-Cyr is a French national military academy originally founded by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1803. Throughout most of its history Saint-Cyr prepared officers for the infantry and cavalry and for staff positions within those services. The school trained a large number of young officers and generals who served during the Napoleonic Wars. After World War II, Saint-Cyr also took over training for engineers, artillerymen, and other technical officers. Graduates are commissioned as first lieutenants in the French army.

Condition of this collectible 19th-century French military atlas is GOOD. All 42 of the maps are intact. There is some light foxing on a few of the maps. The red cloth cover shows considerable wear and there is damage to the spine at the top and bottom. The front interior hinge is cracked. Overall, this historically important atlas shows its age but looks great and would make a wonderful addition to any atlas collection. Please take a close look at the many photos I've provided and judge condition for yourself. I'm confident you'll be very pleased with this purchase.
