We are pleased to present a Heisey glass fruit bowl, with the crossed burgees of the NYYC and Walter P. Murphy. The bowl is 4.75" diameter and sits 2.125" tall. The bowl is in very good condition showing some light wear; the gilt trim shows some light losses and wear. SEE PICTURES! Walter Patton Murphy (1873-1942) was President of the Standard Railway Equipment Co. in Chicago, IL. When his father died in 1919, Walter gained complete control of the Standard Railway Equipment Company. In addition to freight cars and roofs, the company manufactured other railway accessories, such as semaphores, signal bells, and switches. In 1939, he gave $6.7 million to Northwestern University to fund the new Technological Institute. He kept several homes across the States, in Montreal, and in London -- all mainly for business. His principal residence was "Stonebridge," a 360-acre estate at Lake Bluff, Illinois, and he had a winter home at the Rancho Cienega de Los Paicines in California. He had no hobbies, but kept a yacht "Intrepid" that he sold to the U.S. government for $1. His motor yacht, Intrepid, was a 205-foot steel hull boat built in Neponset, MA in 1930 by Arthur B. Raymond, and George Lawley & Son Corp. I found his burgee in the 1935 Lloyd's Register of American Yachts.
