The Classic EMD Passenger Diesel- Many of the most famous passenger trains in the United States were pulled by the classic EMD E8 or E9 diesel locomotive. The E8 was produced from 1949 until the mid-1950s, when it was replaced by its predecessor, which was produced until the mid-1960s. Hundreds of these locomotive types were produced, and many went on to be used in freight service and scores still exist today.
