ARTIST: Mid-19thC Continental, French to Flemish Schools in our opinion SUBJECT: A charming head and shoulder portrait study of a young girl wearing a red headscarf MEDIUM: Oil on canvas SIGNATURE: Monogrammed upper left, probably HRB DATE: c1880, possibly slightly earlier SIZE: Visible painting 24.25 x 19.25cm (9.5 x 7.5 inches), Frame 36 x 31cm ( 14.5 x 12.5 inches), Depth 6cm (2 inches) PROVENANCE: British estate sale, private collection; 19thCgallery label for Biggs and Sons, of Conduit Street, Bond Street London attached to verso CONDITION: Good to fair, overall; canvas has feathered slightly in lone storage and may benefit from re-tensioning; would benefit from cleaning, although previously cleaned in antiquity; tiny chips to the paint across the work, commensurate with age and storage / display FRAME: Original frame to a high standard, shows moderate age-related wear FOR SALE BY AUCTION WITHOUT RESERVE.
We present a charming portrait study in oils, a head and shoulder portrait study of a young girl wearing a red headscarf; a plain, innocent young girl, probably of the travelling communities across Europe. The painting is monogrammed upper left, possibly HRB. Probably north Europe, French or Flemish schools in our opinion, dating c1880, possibly slightly earlier. Lovely original frame, with back label of the notable 19thCc dealers, Biggs and Sons, Conduit Street, Bond Street, London. Presented in good to fair condition in its original frame, this painting will look fabulous displayed
