The wonderfully atmospheric double-sided café sign of rectangular form, constructed from joined timber boards within a moulded frame and suspended from its original iron hanging rods with disc terminals, with both faces being sign-written with the word ‘Cafe’ in a flowing, confident script, executed in black with a green shadowing, softened beautifully with time against a warm, ochre-gilt painted ground and surviving from the first quarter of the twentieth century.

Condition is entirely commensurate with age and use. There is heavy surface wear throughout, including paint loss, staining, and areas of discolouration, all of which contribute to its authenticity and decorative appeal. The timber boards show minor movement and splitting along the joins, as expected, and the iron hanging bar carries surface corrosion but remains solid. Crucially, the sign appears untouched and unrestored, retaining an honest, working-life surface.

Indeed, what elevates this piece is the surface. The background retains a rich, timeworn patina with layered oxidisation, staining, and natural weathering consistent with prolonged outdoor use. The paint has thinned and faded unevenly, allowing the timber beneath to subtly influence the tone, while the lettering itself has a slightly translucent quality, suggesting it was originally applied over a prepared ground rather than as a later addition. The naive yet assured hand of the signwriter, particularly in the sweeping tail of the ‘f’, gives it a quiet elegance that feels earlier than the more graphic, standardised styles of the 1930s.

Signs of this type were typically produced for small independent cafés and roadside establishments in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, designed to be legible from both directions of approach. Survivals with this level of original surface, and without later overpainting are increasingly scarce, particularly examples retaining their original suspension hardware.

A deeply decorative piece, and early for its type, offering both punchy scale and atmosphere; equally suited to interior placement or sheltered exterior display; where its patina can continue to speak for itself.
