History.

The 1986 film Top Gun, directed by Tony Scott and produced by Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer, became one of the defining blockbusters of the 1980s. Inspired by a 1983 California magazine article about the US Navy’s elite fighter pilot school, the film followed Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, played by Tom Cruise, as he trained at the Naval Fighter Weapons School. With its glossy visuals, aerial cinematography and pop-rock soundtrack — especially the hit song Take My Breath AwayTop Gun captured the era’s style and mood. The film was a major box-office success and significantly boosted Cruise’s career. It also renewed public interest in naval aviation, influencing popular culture, fashion and recruitment campaigns for years afterwards, making its 40th anniversary in 2026 a notable milestone.
